Y10 team win through to final 64 in national competition
The Ark William Parker Year 10 football team won through to Round 5 of the National Cup by beating Cardinal Newman School 5-4 on penalties. The match was a repeat of last year’s Sussex County Cup Final. The teams are very closely matched and William Parker had to be at their very best to take the match to penalties once more. Last time out, Newman won the penalty shoot-out but this time round it was Parker’s turn.
The game somehow ended in a goalless draw with both keepers making some fantastic saves. Newman certainly had the better of the first half, Craddock making two outstanding saves. However, the defence grew in strength, led remarkably well by Mapstone, the midfield grew in confidence and Avery began to hold the ball up and make life difficult for the Newman defence.
Parker certainly had the better of the chances in the second half with the Newman keeper making an outstanding double save from a Parker corner.
Chances came and went and both teams missed glorious opportunities in extra time to put the game to bed before the final whistle but in the end the game went to penalties.
This is Parker’s third shoot out this season and for the third time they won through! Craddock making two saves and Peacock scored the decisive penalty.
Coach Jimmy Elford said “These students demonstrated admirable grit and determination to hold on when they were under pressure. They showed great character and concentration when they started dominating the game and winning through on penalties will give the team confidence for the rest of the season. Well done boys!”
