Our students were given the opportunity to consider their aspirations and think about their future goals we held a career focused PSHRE day.
Various activities for Years 7-9 focused on their current achievement, with a session exploring careers websites to identify courses and jobs that maybe of interest to them. Ms Woodcock, Head of English, was very impressed with the maturity Year 9 demonstrated on their target review session which asked students to set themselves short, medium and long term goals.
Year 10 students had a very busy day; they took part in 8 separate activities and received lots of useful information from a number of external visitors who led the sessions. The students also began drafting their personal statements in preparation for UCAS Progress, an application system for post 16 courses and apprenticeships. They also had fun taking part in a session of outdoor activities led by MPCT, the Military Preparation College, which involved exercises and rescuing casualties.
Student Charlie, who wants to join the army said, “I heard how the Military Academy can help with confidence, fitness and coordination. The session was really interesting, especially the bit about extracting casualties. The team explained everything really well and I enjoyed taking part in the field activities which included getting casualties out of the firing zone.”
Bam Nuttall Ltd, an international civil engineering company, brought along three of their apprentices who shared their experiences of working in the construction industry. Students were surprised to hear that there was a shortage of engineers and that an apprentice could receive a salary of up to £15,000. Student Alfie said, “This has been the best one so far, although I did like the University of Brighton session too. Doing an apprenticeship is something I could be interested in and I will find out more. I like that it's different, outdoors, interesting and you get paid."
Guests from Plumpton College talked about interesting careers in agriculture and sport; they said, "Students showed great interest and took lots of taster day leaflets. We were surprised that forestry was proving as popular as sport."
We would like to thank all our guests including the universities of Brighton and Sussex, who explored different courses; Job Centre Plus who discussed the local job market and what it really looks like for students - the jobs available and qualifications they might they need; Plumpton College, Bam Nuttall Ltd and MPCT.
PSHRE coordinator, Mrs Iglinski said, "The students were brilliant; they were enthusiastic; many said they were undecided about their future and found the day very helpful and worthwhile. It has made them realise how many different opportunities were available."
Brighton University, Recruitment and Outreach Co-ordinator Marina Trowell said, "It was really great to meet the staff and students at the school; Joe, Josiah and myself had a very enjoyable day. The feedback from both Joe and Josiah was that they thought the day was well organised; it was really helpful that the groups rotated round each of the rooms. We were asked some good questions by the students. Some of the students had attended the Sports Leadership Day that we held back in February so it was good to hear about how they had enjoyed that day."
Sussex University, Schools and Colleges Partnership Coordinator Chris Derbyshire said, "Feedback from my guys was very good; thanks for your endeavour and hospitality; your boys, were a credit to you."
