Please be aware that St Helen’s Road will close to traffic from 7am on Monday, October 9 and is scheduled to reopen at 5pm on Friday, December 1. The closure will be in place 24 hours a day during this time, with a diversion in place via Elphinstone Road, The Ridge, Junction Road and Sedlescombe Road North in both directions. Schools in Hastings celebrate record breaking results
Ark William Parker and Ark Helenswood Academies celebrate record breaking GCSE results
Ark’s two secondary schools in Hastings have seen improvements in their GCSE grades. At Ark William Parker Academy, the number of students getting at least 5 A*-Cs including English and maths jumped by 6 points, from 44% to 50% and at Ark Helenswood Academy it went up by 11 points from 51% to 62%.

“We are really pleased with the progress that we’ve made at Ark William Parker Academy. You can see that our students have a renewed sense of pride and purpose. These results show that all the hard work of students and staff is really starting to pay off.”
Lucy Monk, Principal at Ark Helenswood Academy, said:
“Our students and staff together have worked very hard to achieve these results- they represent a significant improvement for Helenswood Academy. We’re very proud of what we have accomplished as a school and as a community.”
Ark William Parker Success Stories
Students who are celebrating at Ark William Parker Academy include:
Matthew Browning (2A*, 5A), Mark McCallum (1A*, 4A), Joshua Graham( 5A*, 5A), Leo Graham (8A), Frank He (5A*, 3A), Oliver Tattersfield (2A*, 5A), Stephen Jones (4A*, 6A), Joe Whitehill-James (7A, 2A*), Ollie Owen (4A*, 6A), Alex Pine (7A), Daniel Rose (9A), Taariq Smallman (8A) and George Upton (6A).
Oliver Tattersfield passed 11 GCSEs and 1 BTEC and was thrilled to achieve 2A*s, 5As, 4Bs and a Distinction . When asked how he felt on opening his results, Oliver said “I can only describe how I feel as ecstatic happiness mixed with an intense sense of relief; when you know you have worked so hard and then, finally, you get the end results. This is the best day of my life!”
Oliver went on to say “The teachers are Ark William Parker have been really supportive, especially the English department. I was not particularly good at English but with the help of my teachers I got an A and C. I will definitely be staying on for 6th Form and my aim is to go to university to study physics.”
Stephen Jones was really happy with his results which included 4A*s and 6As. He said "It's been great here; I want to thank the maths teachers, especially Mrs Leigh, who made maths fun. I'm looking forward to Ark 6th Form and hope to be an accountant in the future."
Billy Foster achieved 9 GCSEs and was very pleased with his results. He said “It’s been really good here and the teachers have put in extra time with us, which has made a real difference. I’m really happy and surprised with my results.”
Ark Helenswood Success Stories
Hira Husain from Ark Helenswood Academy is celebrating after getting 2A*s and 8As.
Hira said: “I’m so happy, all the hard work paid off. I’m in shock, I did a lot better than I expected. I didn’t even expect to pass History, let alone get an A! The revision classes really helped, and the teachers were brilliant. They were so supportive. I just want to go and thank them all now.”
“I’m going on to study biology, chemistry, maths and Spanish A level at Ark Sixth Form East Sussex.”
Hira’s whole family was at school to celebrate her results. Her grandmother, Ms Ali said: “I’m very proud, she has worked so hard, and the teachers have been marvellous. It’s the best school ever.”
Sophie West was also delighted with her results getting 6A*s and 4 As in her GCSES. Sophie said: “I’m very happy, particularly with maths. The teachers here are supportive and very nice, I learn a lot better when the teachers are supportive.” She was taught maths by Miss Chicken, a former Helenswood girl herself and is staying on for sixth form.
Bethany Streeter was also pleased, getting 2A*s, 6 As and a B grade. She said: “I’ve done a lot better than expected – wants to go on to be a primary school teacher.
Sasha Lloyd-Briscoe also came into school today to pick up her grades. She did fantastically well, securing 4A*s and 7 As at GCSE. Sasha said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time here at Helenswood. It’s been great.”
Ella Rudge was today celebrating her 2 A*s and 7 As. She said: “These results make me want to stay her for sixth form. If I can get these results with these teachers, (which I wasn’t expecting), then I know I can succeed at sixth form. The teachers invest so much time in you. I thought I’d fail English! I want to study Biochemistry.”
